Master the skip crossover by progressing from foundational footwork to an aggressive, weight-shifting attack, designed to create separation.
The drill
Combine skip → aggressive push → crossover, snatching ball big to small, emphasizing back foot push.
Let's break down one of my favorite moves, the skip crossover. Step one is our skip. You're going to dribble and jump off your inside foot. Just practice this walking to half-court, get your inside foot skip down. Step two is our crossover. Off of our skip, we're going to push off our back foot and get into our crossover. It's really important to get low and shift our weight to shift our defender. Practice this by going skip into our crossover position landing. Do that a couple times. Skip, push. Step three is putting it all together with our crossover. So now, we're going to skip, push into our crossover. The keys for our crossover are to really snatch the ball aggressively, get big with your hand and then get small. Big to small. Also, really emphasize pushing off that back foot. You want to be aggressive with that push.
Is this drill for you?
For intermediate scorers (Level 3) mastering the skip crossover as a weight-shifting attack move.
Variations: Per the trainer: snatch big-to-small and push hard off the back foot.
In a game: The skip loads your inside foot so the crossover explodes - the weight shift is what actually moves the defender.
Needs a hoop for the finishing reps; practice the skip walking to half-court first.
