The drill
Throw ball across body → step opposite of throw with weight shift → second step opposite, wide base → cross below knee with shift.
What's up, hoopers? Today I'm going to be showing you how to do a cross jab cross. Come with me. All right, guys, we're going to break this combo down to four total moves: throw, step, step, cross. That's it. Let's get into it. First things first, let's go ahead and work on that throw. Throw. Throw. All right, guys, you're literally just going to throw the ball across your body. Step number two, let's go ahead and work on that step. Easy money. Throw, step. Throw, step. All right, guys, take notice on that step. I'm going to step opposite of the throw. So, if I throw it towards the left, I'm going to step towards the right. Also take notice whenever I step, I'm also going to shift my weight in the direction of that step. So, in this instance, I'm stepping towards the right, I'm going to shift my body towards the right. Step number three, let's go ahead and add in that second step. This is where it gets nasty. Throw, step, step. Throw, step, step. All right, guys, take notice after that first step and shift, I'm going to step and shift in the opposite direction now. So now I'm going to step in the left direction and my body weight is going to shift to the left. That's what makes this move shifty right here, my friends. Also take notice how wide my base is. This is going to help set up that crossover coming next. Step number four, let's go ahead and add in that cross. Throw, step, step, cross. Throw, step, step, cross. All right, guys, take notice on that crossover how I really shift into it and sell it like I'm going to be driving, and then I'm going to cross that thing below my knees. The reason I'm crossing it below my knees so the defender can't get his hands on it. All right, guys, now let's put this thing all together and see how it looks going 100%. Oh.
Is this drill for you?
For novice ballhandlers (Level 2) learning the cross jab cross - a four-part breakdown (throw, step, step, cross) taught piece by piece.
Variations: Mirror it both directions.
In a game: The double weight-shift is what makes a defender lunge - this builds the shift before the cross.
