Master the skip hezy step to force defensive reactions, allowing you to blow by, shoot, or change direction for dynamic scoring.
Drill 1 of 3
Perform a skip hezy step → if defender plays too tight → blow by them for a finish.
Drill 2 of 3
Perform a skip hezy step → if defender sits back → pull up for a jump shot.
Drill 3 of 3
Perform a skip hezy step → if defender cuts off hard → counter with a cross and drive opposite.
Let's break down one of my favorite setup moves: the skip hesi step. A great way to work on this is put a cone right in front of where your defender would be. All we're going to do is skip and hesi, making our defender make a decision. Work on getting your foot to that cone. The closer we can get to that cone, the more our defender has to make a decision, and it will be easier for us to read them. If our defender plays us too tight, our first read is skip and go by. If our defender backs off us when we skip, we're going to shoot. If our defender cuts us off hard one way, we're going to counter and go the other way.
Is this drill for you?
For intermediate scorers (Level 3) reading the skip hesi - blow by if tight, shoot if they back off, counter if they cut you off.
The ladder: Blow-by read first, then the pull-up read, then the change-of-direction counter.
Variations: Get your foot to the cone before deciding.
In a game: The skip hesi forces the defender to choose - all three of his choices have an answer here.
15 minutes; needs a hoop and a cone for the defender's spot.
