Master the jab step to efficiently create scoring options, forcing defenders to react while maintaining an athletic, low stance for quick reads.
The drill
From shooting stance, jab 45 degrees to any side → Step for shot OR Drive by OR Jab counter. (Stay low use your foot to sell the fake ).
Let's break down one of my favorite moves, the jab step. This is a great and efficient move that creates options for you as an offensive player. Step one, get in your shooting stance. Step two, jab at your defender 45 degrees, forcing them to open their defensive stance. From our jab, this is where we make our decision. Either step for our shot, either continue to go by, or jab, counter, change direction, and clip their hip. We want the ball to be connected and strong to our body. No one can hit it away from us. Sometimes athletes take the ball too much in front, or they don't move it at all. It's just enough, a slight ball move to get our defender to shift. The last tip for your jab step is don't change your height. You want to stay athletic and ready to make any read you need, so stay low. You can jab, get into your shot, you can jab and go, but stay the same height.
Is this drill for you?
For novice scorers (Level 2) learning the jab step - 45-degree jab from a shooting stance, then shoot, drive, or counter off the read.
Variations: Stay the same height through the jab and the read.
In a game: The jab opens the defender's stance - shoot, blow by, or counter cross all come from the same jab.
5 minutes; needs a hoop.
← Easier: Explosive Jab-Step Footwork · Harder: Triple Threat Jab Step →
