Master the behind-the-back speed stop by attacking hard, stopping with inside-outside footwork, and quickly snatching the ball for a fluid shot.

The drill

Behind the Back Speed Stop

5 min · 10 reps

Attack hard off catch → inside-outside foot stop → snatch ball behind back → raise straight up for one-motion shot.

Transcript
Let's break down one of my favorite moves, the behind the back speed stop. Step one is to attack hard off the catch. Step two is off our attack, we're stopping inside outside foot. This is really the key. It's the same footwork as if you're going to pull up for a jumper. From our inside outside foot stop, we're going to snatch the ball quickly behind our back while we stop. The keys on the behind the back are to keep it tight and quick, and low. From our stop, raise straight up. Don't stand up and go back down to shoot. It's one motion from as soon as the ball hits our hand to our shot.

Is this drill for you?

For intermediate scorers (Level 3) learning the behind-the-back speed stop as a shot-creating move.

Trains: ball-handling · footwork · shooting form · balance

Variations: Per the trainer: keep the BTB tight, quick, and low, and rise straight up from the stop in one motion.

In a game: Attack hard, stop inside-outside, snatch behind the back - the stop mirrors pull-up footwork so the shot is always live.

Needs a hoop for the full move into the shot.
