Master Wemby's nasty pump fake step-back combo, progressing through pump, drive, drag, and step to create space and score.
The drill
Pump fake → drive → drag ball under left leg → flip feet, push off right foot → left-right footwork for shot.
What's up, hoopers? Today, I'm going to be showing you how to do Wemby's nasty pump-fake step-back combo. Come with me. All right, guys, we're going to break this combo down to four total moves: pump, drive, drag, and step. That's it. Let's get into it. First things first, let's go ahead and work on that pump-fake. Pump. Pump. All right, guys, take notice how I let the ball go above my head to really sell that shot. Step number two, let's go ahead and work on that drive. Easy money. Pump, drive. Pump, drive. All right, guys, take notice on that drive, I'm just going to dribble with my right hand and put my left leg out in front into a lunge position right here. Step number three, let's go ahead and work on that drag. This is where it gets nasty. Pump, drive, drag. Pump, drive, drag. All right, guys, take notice I just drag that ball right under my left leg with my right arm into my left arm now. Also take notice how I'm still in this lunge position because that's going to help me step back coming next. Step number four, let's go ahead and add that step. This is where it really gets nasty. Pump, drive, drag, step. Pump, drive, drag, step. All right, guys, take notice after that drag, I'm just going to flip my feet. Now I'm going to go right foot, push back right into my left-right footwork for that jump shot. So it's going to look like this. Boom. Drag, switch my feet so I can push back off of that right leg, left-right, elevate for the shot. All right, guys, now let's put it all together. See how it looks going a hundred percent. Pump, drive, drag, step. Wemby! Not about the three. Now he does. Step back! You bet! Over Gobert!
Is this drill for you?
For advanced scorers (Level 4) adding Wemby's pump-fake step-back - a four-part combo (pump, drive, drag, step) taught piece by piece in 5 minutes.
The ladder: Learn the pump first, then the drive, then the drag under the leg, then the step-back - only then run it at full speed.
Variations: Mirror it: pump, drive left, drag under the right leg, step back.
In a game: The pump sells the shot, the drive pulls the help, and the drag-step creates the space - a real late-clock weapon.
No hoop needed to drill the four-part footwork; add a rim to finish the shot.
