Master fighting over the top of a defender by throwing the ball to space, then quickly gathering for an efficient, contested shot.
The drill
Dribble past defender (over top) → throw ball to space → run to ball → gather → quick shot
Throw in it. Boom. Now we're up, okay? Boom. Good. There you go. Throw it out there.
Is this drill for you?
For intermediate players (Level 3) who can dribble and shoot on the move and want to practice beating a defender over the top into a quick self-created shot - hoop required, no partner needed.
In a game: Throwing the ball over the top into space and running it down is the pick-and-roll answer when the defender goes under or plays soft - this builds the burst and gather that turns the pocket into a quick shot.
Needs a hoop and room to throw the ball ahead and sprint to it.
